Welcome to W.L.U. LEAP’s ‘Technology Camp for Girls’ (aka Girl Geeks at LEAP)!
Our camp got off to a great start today! We have 20 enthusiastic campers who were excited to get busy this morning with our variety of technology activities.
On our website, you will be able to see plans for each day, the girls’ individual websites, ‘Girl Stuff’ resources, and links to many great sites that we will be using. I hope you will visit our website and explore the projects that the girls do - there will be some awesome work posted as the days go on!
In my role as Technology Support Teacher with the WRDSB, I have spent a significant amount of time talking to students, teachers, parents, and others about Digital Citizenship - the concept of being informed about the web, and knowing how to navigate it safely, legally and ethically. Part of our program today involved a discussion about Digital Citizenship. Being a good Digital Citizen means taking control of your Digital Footprint and creating a web identity that is strong and positive. Because much of the work we will be doing in this camp is web-based, I feel that it is very important that the campers understand their rights and responsibilities as web-users. The web today is a very exciting, fast-paced, and ever-changing world. The campers will be exploring a wide variety of web apps this week - some that have been around for a while, and many that are brand new! These are all listed on our camp website, and projects completed by the campers will be posted on their sites for you to explore!
Because this is a camp just for girls, our focus will also be on issues and activities that are engaging and empowering for girls. This will include visits by young women who work in the local tech sector. Today we had an awesome visit by ?? We are excited about the perspective they will bring to our camp and the opportunity for the girls to meet and learn from them! If YOU are a ‘Girl Geek’ and might be interested in speaking to our group, please let me know - either in person, or via my email, below.
I am an avid social media user and will be tweeting out links and highlights from the week. If you are a twitter user (or would like to become one!), please follow me at @susan_watt and/or follow the hashtags for LEAP at #wluleapkids and our camp at #girlgeeksatleap.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. You can chat with me in the morning or afternoon, or send me an email anytime. For more public comments, you are welcome to comment here on this blog!
I look forward to spending the week with your girls!
Cheers!
